Just one year ago, Austin Odongo was sitting for national exams in Homabay County, dreaming of a future filled with possibilities. Today, at just 19 years old, he stands on the brink of greatness, preparing to represent Kenya at the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024. His journey from a schoolboy footballer to a national team prospect is nothing short of remarkable.
Odongo is not merely one of the youngest players in the tournament—he embodies the spirit of resilience and ambition that inspires many. Recently completing Form Four, the final year of secondary school in Kenya, he has earned his place among the final 25-man Harambee Stars squad for CHAN, a competition dedicated to players from domestic leagues.
“I was over the moon when I received the call-up. It felt like a just reward for my hard work in my first season with Shabana,” Odongo shared with excitement. “Knowing that the coach believes in me and sees my potential is incredibly motivating. I am ready to give my all for the team if given the chance.”
From Youth Captain to Kenya Premier League Standout

Odongo’s ascent began when he captained Homabay County to victory in a Youth tournament organized by the Ministry of Sports, capturing the attention of scouts across the nation. With offers pouring in from various Kenyan Premier League clubs, he made a heartfelt choice to join Shabana FC, a beloved club with a rich history.
In his debut season, Odongo proved his worth by scoring seven goals and providing two assists in the second leg of the season. “Playing at Shabana was a phenomenal learning experience. I embraced the challenges of the Premier League and am proud of how I performed,” he reflected. “The club created an environment where I could flourish, and I feel I’ve grown tremendously because of it. Now, I am ready to take my game to the next level.”
Despite narrowly missing out on Kenya’s provisional squad for the U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt, that setback only ignited an even greater fire within him. And now, he has made it. Odongo hopes to inspire Kenya in their CHAN debut, with the thrilling anticipation of his first international match against DR Congo at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani.
“This is a monumental opportunity for me. It’s a chance to showcase my talent on a grand stage with the national team,” he explained. “Competing against experienced players from across the continent is both daunting and exhilarating. This platform could propel my career forward—you never know who might be watching. My goal is to contribute decisively to the team’s success when called upon and ensure we shine on this international stage.”
Kenya’s “Last Born” Now Looking Ahead

Affectionately dubbed the “Last Born” of the team because of his youth, Odongo symbolizes the bright future of Kenyan football. As the spotlight of CHAN beams down on East Africa and scouts keep a watchful eye, this talented teenager is on the verge of a breakthrough.
If Odongo delivers on this grand stage, he will not only announce himself as a rising star for the future but as a significant player in the present—one who could transform the landscape of Kenyan and African football forever. With determination, passion, and skill, Austin Odongo is poised to shine brightly and inspire generations to come.
